Waltz- The Waltz appeared as a fashionable dance in Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria, and other parts of Europe in the late 1700’s. Danced ¾ time, it’s an easy dance to distinguish. There are three basic styles of Waltz: Viennese Waltz, Slow Waltz, and Old Time Waltz. In our group classes we teach Slow Waltz which can be danced to any style of music; Country Western, Traditional, and Pop.
Fox Trot- The Fox Trot remains the most popular social dance in the world today. Little did Harry Fox realize that this trotting on a New York stage in 1913 would become an overnight success. The Fox Trot is the foundation for many of the social dances that followed. It is enjoyed by all age groups for its ease of movement and smooth style. We have adopted the style to fit on today’s dance floors. Whether you’re at a wedding, Christmas party, or just out dancing for the night, Fox Trot is your dance for slow music.
Tango- Originally a light spirited dance from Spain, the Tango became very popular in the slums and bordellos of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the U.S., Tango became all the rage right before the first World War. In New York City alone some 700 dance halls opened, and Tango teas became popular in big hotels. Today there are three types of Tango: American style, International style, and Argentine style. American style Tango in characterized by a close hold, a low center of gravity, and a stealthy, almost cat-like attack.
East Coast Swing (club style)- Club East Coast Swing is an updated version of traditional swing. This club craze started with a television commercial showing this style and dancers became eager to learn these steps. We will teach you how to use these steps to both medium tempo music (Swing), and fast tempos (Jitterbug).
Salsa- The word Salsa means sauce denoting a "hot" flavor. It is best distinguished from other Latin music styles by defining it as the New York sound developed by Puerto Rican musicians. The dance structure is largely associated with Mambo type patterns. This dance is great for nightclubs and very flexible with timing, though it’s typically danced to faster tempos.
Cha Cha- The Cha Cha arrived in the U.S. in 1954 and sparked a passionate dance craze. As music always dictates the dance, the triple or split-beat steps were inserted when a slower version of Mambo music was being played. The Cha cha is a non-progressive, lively, and fun dance. The legs and hips are used to produce a strong rhythmical movement that compliments the music. Because of this dance's easy adaptation to modern music, the Cha Cha is probably the most popular of the Latin dances.
Rumba- Ballroom Rumba is a sensual dance done to romantic music. The Rumba's distinguishing features are a romantic feel and a languorous beat. Perhaps most important to the character of the dance is its "Cuban Motion", a rolling action of the hops that gives it its sensual look. The various rhythms and body expressions make this a very popular dance to watch and to participate in.
Nightclub Two-Step- Not to be confused with Country-Western Two-Step, the Nightclub two-step in one of the most practical and versatile social dances ever conceived. It is designed to be used with contemporary soft rock ("Love Song" type music). This type of music is common just about everywhere: nightclubs, radio, etc. The rhythm of the dance is very simple and rarely changes from the 1 and 2 count. This simple romantic dance fills a gap where no other ballroom dance fits. It gives the dancer, either beginning or advanced, the opportunity to express and create without rigid technique being required.
Lindy- Lindy Hop is the original swing dance from which the other swing dances evolved. Officially born in 1927, Lindy Hop was created by young African Americans in Harlem to be danced to the new jazz and swing music of the time.
